By Yimou Lee TAIPEI (Reuters) -Taiwan opposition lawmakers survived a major recall election on Saturday, thwarting a bid to oust one-fifth of the island's parliamentarians - a move supporters had hoped would send a message to China but that opponents called an assault on democracy.
The Office of Management and Budget under the Executive Office of the President said the Trump administration appreciated the $500 million allocated by the House of Representatives, calling it "critical to enabling the Department of Defense's efforts to strengthen Taiwan's self-defense capabilities ," the Focus Taiwan news portal reported.
