Under the guise of promoting “effective interoperability” within the smartphone industry through the Digital Markets Act (DMA), the European Commission is asking Apple to open the gates of its walled garden a little more so that Android users and anyone else who wants access can periodically play inside. The commission writes:

Apple is set to have another run-in with the European Union after the bloc released a new Digital Markets Act (DMA) proposal suggesting the company allow rivals access to proprietary technology, including AirDrop and AirPlay.

The EU is pressuring Apple to increase interoperability with third parties, including opening up AirDrop and AirPlay. The proposed changes could potentially allow seamless file transfer between iOS and Android platforms.

AirDrop and AirPlay are popular features that significantly benefit users, but are currently unavailable to non-Apple users. This may change in the future in the European Union (EU), where proposals are being developed that could require Apple to make these features accessible on Android devices.
