Trump, one of the top spreaders of election falsehoods, has argued this executive order will secure the vote against illegal voting by noncitizens. Multiple studies and investigations in individual states have shown that noncitizens casting ballots in federal elections, already a felony, is exceedingly rare.

There is broad agreement among Republicans that the government, particularly the federal bureaucracy, is too bloated for its own good. And despite coming into office with such power vested in the executive, President Donald Trump has overseen an aggressive effort to slash his own branch, to the relief of conservatives in Congress.

The Democratic Party on Monday filed a lawsuit to block Trump's executive order overhauling the US election system.
