‘Tremendous roar’: 30 years later, residents recall F3 tornado that struck Fort Smith, Van Buren
Janet Spears had just gone to bed one spring night in 1996 when her bedroom door opened and she saw the windows in her living room shatter. A tornado was passing through her Van Buren neighborhood.
RIVER VALLEY, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — On April 21, 1996, an F3 tornado ripped through Fort Smith and Van Buren, causing two fatalities, more than 40 injuries, and extensive damage to hundreds of buildings.
