Apparently it wasn’t so much the art work itself that puzzled Customs inspectors at Dulles International Airport earlier this month, it was where the paint had been applied: to the shells of turtles.

The Pacific Northwest has two native freshwater turtles, the Western painted turtle and the Western pond turtle. The pond turtle, found on the West Side, is state-listed as endangered in Washington.
