On a single winter day in early January 2026, one struggling carrier managed to account for nearly a third of all canceled flights in the United States, despite flying only a small share of the country's schedule.

A winter storm threatened thousands of flights heading into the weekend across two dozen states, as airlines issue travel waivers for customers impacted by the snow.

At the time, the airline cited unprofitability and lack of demand as reasons for its shutdown. As first reported by the BankruptcyObserver watchdog, Tailwind Air has now filed for Chapter 11 protection in the Eastern District of Virginia bankruptcy court on January 15, 2026.

Despite the chaos, some travelers were still able to make it into Raleigh.
