Poland has frequently scrambled jets to react to waves of Russian aerial attacks on its neighbor throughout the more than three and a half years of full-scale war. Sweden, NATO's newest member, currently has fighter jets stationed in northern Poland for its turn of the alliance's air policing mission.

Ukraine has come under heavy Russian bombardment overnight, with a child among three people killed in Kyiv, Ukrainian officials said early on Thursday. Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the attack on Ukraine's capital was "massive" with military officials confirming at least 24 people had been injured.
