Former Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback DeShea Townsend interviewed for the San Francisco 49ers' defensive coordinator job.

The San Francisco 49ers announced that they have completed an interview with Detroit Lions defensive backs coach Deshea Townsend for their defensive coordinator vacancy.

The San Francisco 49ers officially announced that they interviewed Robert Saleh for their vacant defensive coordinator position. Over the next week or two, more names should continue to trickle in. The Niners also interviewed another external candidate Thursday afternoon.

Townsend is a former longtime Steelers cornerback who has managed secondaries across the NFL over the last decade. He has been a defensive backs coach for the Titans (2016-17), Giants (2018, assistant), Bears (2019-21), Jaguars (2022-23) and Lions (2024). The last two stops have included duties as the defensive passing game coordinator.

Former New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh has completed an interview for the San Francisco 49er's vacant defensive coordinator position, the team announced Thursday. The front office also met with Detroit Lions defensive backs coach and defensive passing game coordinator Deshea Townsend.

Townsend played 13 NFL seasons, including 12 as a Steeler in his career, prior to becoming a coach. Another Lions' assistant, offensive line coach Hank Fraley, is scheduled to interview for the Seahawks offensive coordinator position Friday.
