May 1, 2024 · I’ve been looking for a solo canoe for weeks now. I’d like to get a nice composite canoe for trips to the Adirondacks but my budget is a bit lower than that what these usually sell for. Through my research on solo canoes I’ve seen people mention the Old Town Pack canoes and it seems like there is a cult following for them.

My experience with a 39" wide canoe of the same length but about two thirds the weight is that it will be a bit awkward to pick it up and loft it to shoulders for solo carry. It's amazing, even to me, how much easier it is to loft a 36" by 16' canoe of the same weight than a 39" by 13'.

Oct 25, 2022 · Old Town specs says the NEXT weight at 59 pounds with the seat out that takes it to 53 or 54 pounds. I haven't seen Old Town or anyone else claim the NEXT is a white-water high-performance canoe. I found it works well enough for what it was intended for, an affordable solo craft that will carry a paddler and enough gear for a week's camping trip.

The Pack canoe weighs about 33 lbs and carries 440 lbs with 10" of freeboard, Even if you weigh 200 lbs. + that is still more gear and supplies than you are likely to need.
