Mastering the Locks: Watching the Erie Canal locks in action is a fascinating process. There are 35 locks on this iconic waterway as the elevation rises 566 feet from the Canal at the Hudson River to the Canal at Lake Erie. Today I witnessed this process in Newark, NY at Lock 28B as the Colonial Belle made her way to Fairport. Moving vessels along through the Erie Canal requires shifting water levels from lock to lock.
