August 1864 has gone down in Andersonville's history as the deadliest month during the prison's operation. The number of dead carried out the gates nearly equaled the number of new prisoners coming in. 2,993 deaths occured in August alone - an average of 96 per day. August 23, however, would prove to be the deadliest with 127 men dying in the heat of the summer.
